Chapter Twenty-Six

Man Down

Blaise

“Jack and I have very different ideas of fun,” Blaise muttered as he slid down from Emrys’s back. The stallion flew to the north side of the ghost town, near what appeared to be the dilapidated remains of stores built side-by-side along a boardwalk.

The pegasus snorted. <No one has real bullets. This is a simple way to gain practice in a combat situation.>

“Doesn’t mean I’ll have fun, though.” Blaise patted the stallion’s neck. “Thanks for the ride.”

<Good luck.> Emrys bobbed his head and trotted off before lurching into the air to join the other pegasi on a cliff overlooking the canyon.

Blaise stood on the main drag of the ghost town and turned in a slow circle, taking in his surroundings. A building with a steeple crouched at the end of the defunct, dusty road. Scrub grew up around the remains of the buildings, obscuring their facades. Blaise walked closer to one, peering through the window. The structure’s roof had collapsed into the interior, sunbeams illuminating the wreckage.

Jack’s piercing whistle sliced the air. Blaise rolled his shoulders, drawing a deep breath. He exhaled, forcing out his annoyance at the situation. None of the other trainees were in his view yet, but it would only be a matter of time. Blaise was reluctant to take part in this exercise, but he didn’t want to be the first out. Jack wouldn’t let him live it down.

Blaise slipped into the building with the ruined roof. Once inside, slanted pieces of timber proved some optimistic person had tried to shore up the roof before it fell in, but time and the elements rendered their attempts useless. Blaise skirted the worst of the debris and found a questionably safe place to wait and consider his options.

Six shots. Each trainee had six, so no one person could take out everyone. That meant they would have to rely on crossfire or allies taking out their opponents. If he teamed up with one other person, they would have twelve shots between them.

He expected the teens without magic would group up, bolstering their lack of magic with numbers. Would the other mages feel the same way, or would they prefer to keep apart?

Blaise thought about that. He would prefer to work with someone else. Maybe he could find Reuben and join forces. Reuben had no magic and wasn’t a better shot than Blaise, but at least they could be hopeless together. And maybe he could find Emmaline. They would have a chance with her on their side.

That was a solid idea. The hardest part was going to be finding them and not getting shot by anyone else first.

He crept closer to the window, peering out. Skunkbush and stunted cat-claw trees provided cover, obscuring his position. Two teens scurried down the street, crouching as they ran to keep a low profile. The shrubs hindered his view, so Blaise couldn’t tell exactly who they were, but he didn’t think they were mages.

A pop split the air, followed by the ping of a pellet hitting a target.
